Alliance between Greece & Israel :

Shall we allow it ?

…is the title of the open discussion organised tommorow evening (October 31st, 2011) by the Greek Intifada Solidarity Association to the Palestinian People.

The panel of speaker constitutes of :

-economist Leonidas Vatikiotis

-member of the Ship to Gaza project Vaggelis Pissias

-journalist Aris Hatzistefanou

During a period when the Greek society is in the verge of bankruptcy and the successive revolts alternate the political map in the Middle East, the governments of Greece and Cyprus (under the US encouragement always) do make the choice to form a new alliance with Israel. An alliance that begins with the joint exploitation of any gas fields in the Cypriot “AOZ” (: Exclusive Economic Zone) and go as deep as joint military exercises, as well as huge commissions of Israeli weaponry and of repression methods against popular demonstrations and mobilizations.

We consider the ongoing alliance of Greece & Cyprus with Israel a morally unacceptable and politically dangerous development. Morally unacceptable because it reinforces (moreover in a militaristic sense) the Zionist state that continues the Arab lands occupation and the low but steady density ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. Politically dangerous because it creates new conditions that could trigger ignition in the Southeastern Mediterranean region and brings Greece and Cyprus against the Arab world.

We do know of course that the basic priority of the movements in our country is the resistance against the Memorandum, the layoffs, the hikes and the selling off of public wealth. Nevertheless, we do believe that the ongoing reconstruction of this Greek-Israeli alliance may have extremely serious implications for the Greek society. Therefore we need to find a way to integrate this element in the social resistances agenda.
